In case you haven’t heard, clothing rentals subscription services are becoming more and more popular. Several of my friends have raved about Rent the Runway, so I decided to try it out.

First step is to go online and sign up: http://www.renttherunway.com

They offer 3 different plans 5 items/month = ($75 trial this goes to $94/mo after), 10 items/month $85/mo (trial – this goes to $144/mo after) and put to 20 items/mo. =$169 (trial – this goes to $235/mo after).

Once you have signed up, you go through the site and start selecting your first 5 items to receive. NOTE: they only send you 5 items at a time – so as an FYI if you you choose to hold onto any item, and ship only some back – your next delivery will be not 5 fresh items, but rather only the amount that makes it 5 items in home What this means is you’re not actually signing up for 10 or 20 items, but rather 2 or 3 shipments/bags. This matters, because regardless of how hard you try, it is unlikely that everything you send for will fit and/or look as good as you hoped it would.

Next, there are a TON of clothes to select from, sounds great, but it is incredibly time consuming to optimize and select your picks for what is basically the week out (this may be a bit easier when we aren’t between seasons.). However, based on this, despite signing up for a promotional special for 15 (3 bags a month) I will be dropping this down to 5, as I continue to assess.

Once you select and submit your order, the turnaround is pretty quick, between 2-4 days, depending on what day/time you place your order.

Here I walk you through my experience with Rent the Runway.

From there you are ready to go! Try the pieces on, work them into your wardrobe, send them back or hold onto them as long as you would like – just remember (any piece that you choose to hold onto will bring the number of additional pieces down.
